ESRC award holders

As an ESRC award holder you are expected to make the research data that result from your award available for secondary scientific research. This is specified in the ESRC Research data policy.

Research data are offered for archiving to the ESRC Data Store within three months of the end of the grant.

ESRC Research Centres often manage multiple datasets at different stages of the research process. You can use our data inventory template to keep track of your centre's data assets and to coordinate future data deposits. Centres should get in touch when ready to deposit a collection of data.

ESRC award holders offer their data for archiving by creating a metadata record for their research project and uploading data and documentation files, following these steps.

1. Log in to ESRC Data Store

  • log in to the ESRC Data Store using your UK HE/FE institutional login credentials
  • when you log in for the first time you are asked to register with ESRC Data Store by providing your name, email address and a  username - use your institutional username or create a new one; and to accept the terms and conditions

2. Generate a new project using your ESRC award number

  • your award details are retrieved from the ESRC Research catalogue and prefill part of the metadata form
  • complete any missing metadata
  • new project records must be created by the Principal Investigator (ESRC award holder).
  • this project record becomes a public record for your project's data resources

3. Prepare your data and documentation files

4. Upload data files and documentation files

  • upload all research data resulting from the ESRC award
  • if any data files should not be accessible to the research community, provide your reasons under 'legal and ethical issues review'
  • exclusions or embargo periods are subject to ESRC agreement; ESRC regards a waiver of data deposit as an exception and reserves the right to refuse waivers where there is insufficient evidence to prevent archiving and data sharing

5. Send your data deposit for review

  • in the Review Status of the project record check the boxes 'Confirm materials are ready for review' and 'Confirm materials are ready for publication', to submit your deposit
  • ESRC Data Store staff will review your data offer before publising data to the live system
