Access to the Secure Lab

Information about how registered users can apply for access to Controlled data via the UK Data Service Secure Lab.

Access to the Secure Lab is available to researchers who can fulfil the access requirements for the data required:

  • The purpose of your use/project must be to serve the 'public good'.
  • Access must be from within the UK.
  • For ONS data: researchers must be an ONS Accredited Researcher, and details on how to apply for this status will be provided during the application process. Further details are available from: ONS Approved Researcher Scheme
  • For non-government data: selected studies require researchers to be based at a UK academic institution or an ESRC-funded research centre, and be an ESRC Accredited Researcher. PhD and research students can request access but will need to apply jointly with their supervisors. We do have some studies that are available to all researchers who can meet the conditions of access. Refer to the 'Access' tab for each study in the Data Catalogue for details of any access restrictions.
  • SN 6676 can be accessed by German researchers via the IAB RDC, Nuremberg, but the other conditions of access for this study still apply.

Team projects

For project teams, each team member must be registered with the UK Data Service. For information on how to register please refer to our Registration pages.

When team members have completed the registration process, the lead researcher can then add each team member to their project. To do this the lead researcher should:

  • Log into their UK Data Service account
  • Expand the 'Data' section and then click on 'Projects'
  • Click the relevant project title and a number of tabs will then be visible, e.g. Projects, Datasets, Members
  • Click 'Members', then 'New member'
  • Enter the email address for the team member you want to add. Note: the email address entered must be the one the team member used when registering with the UK Data Service
  • Click 'Add member' and their details will be shown in the 'Project team invitations' section of the screen. Once the team member has accepted the invitation their details will be shown in 'Project team members'.

Each team member will receive an invitation email to ask whether they wish to be added to the project.

When they accept the invitation they will be added to the project. Each project member will be able to see the project and associated datasets within their own account. They should then complete any actions required. See 'Apply' for details.
