I'm not employed by an organisation, can I use data from your collection?

Yes you can. The open data we hold are available without the need to register. However, if you require access to safeguarded data then you will need to register with us.

How do I register with you?

To register with us you will firstly have to obtain a username and password from the UK Data Archive. Once these have been supplied to you, you can then register with the UK Data Service. For details on how to register see our information for other UK users or non-UK users.

I'm a genealogist, can I use data from your collection?

Yes you can, but the UK Data Service contains very little information which may be of use to genealogists tracing their ancestors. However, you may find our genealogy page useful as this contains links to other websites that may of interest.

How do I download data?

Information on how to download or order data from our collection is available from our download/order pages.

What data formats are available?

Most survey datasets are available to download in SPSS, Stata and tab-delimited (suitable for use in MS Excel) formats.

For further details see our FAQ about the data formats we provide.

Are there any restrictions on access for personal use?

  • access to controlled data (via our Secure Lab) is restricted to UK academic researchers and PhD students
  • some of our data collections which require the completion of a special licence are restricted to users in the UK
  • some of the international macrodata available via UKDS.Stat are only available to UK HE/FE users. However, selected international macrodata are available to everyone

Each study has a Discover record and details of any restrictions will be found in the 'Access conditions' section.

Do you have any open data?

We have a number of studies that are available to use without the need to register with us. Further details are available from our open access data page.
