Making the most of Census microdata: An introductory workshop

Are you interested in learning more about census microdata and how they can be used in research? Have you considered using census data but are not sure what is available? Would you be interested in using R in your research?

This free workshop will introduce you to the UK Data Service census microdata collection and the ONS longitudinal study. Most of the census microdata can be accessed via download from the UK Data Service website and the ONS longitudinal data are accessed in ONS secure settings.

The morning session will introduce these data sources and there will be presentations from experienced researchers showing how they have used these data in their research. The afternoon session will give you hands-on on experience of using the census microdata from the UK Data Service using R.

The workshop will include:

• An introduction to the census microdata and the ONS Longitudinal Study: datasets available to researchers, how to access
• Research use cases: showcasing research uses of the data
• Hands-on sessions: Basic analyses of the 2011 census microdata using R

Level: Introductory
Experience/Knowledge required: Basic understanding of survey research. Experience of using statistics software such as SPSS or Stata would be helpful for the practical session, though no prior knowledge of R is expected.
Target audience: Anyone who would like to learn more about using census data for research and who would like to learn basic data analysis skills using R.
